There’s no doubt. Africa is an intriguing, extraordinary place. We’ve both been lucky enough to have experienced parts of it firsthand---and have very distinct images, sounds and aromas forever forged into our memory chambers about it.
Now we feel extremely fortunate to be putting some brainpower towards AmericaShare---the nonprofit arm of luxury outfitters Micato Safaris. AmericaShare was founded over 20 years ago by Micato to give back to the people of Africa; now the primary goal is to create real and lasting change for a generation facing more challenges than ever. And 100% of donations go directly to those in need. We think that’s pretty worthwhile.
But obviously, we’re not the only ones with Africa on our minds. There’s Oprah and Madonna and Angelina. Not to mention American Idol’s recent Africa-focused show that raised over 60 million dollars. In July, Vanity Fair is dedicating their entire issue to Africa (with Bono on board as guest editor).
Then there’s the whole China-Africa thing. When did they become BFFs? “Chinese and African leaders unanimously agreed to forge and develop a new type of China-Africa strategic partnership featuring political equality and mutual trust, economic win-win cooperation and cultural exchanges,” says an excerpt about Hu’s recent African tour in ChinaDaily.com.cn
Africa is a volatile continent with untapped natural resources and over 900,00,000 people---many in the most dire of conditions. So next time it pops up on your radar screen, give it a little attention. It can make a big difference.
